Surprising Signs That Your Home Needs Roof Repairs
Sometimes a home's roof may have leaks or otherwise need work without the damage being obvious to the naked eye. If you're a homeowner, you should be aware of any signs of damage so you can have your home's roof inspected and repaired as soon as possible in order to keep that damage from getting worse. Consider a few of those surprising signs here.
1. Discoloration on your ceiling
Any discoloration on your ceiling should be a signal for you to call a roofer and have your home's roof inspected. These stains are not typically from dirt but are usually the result of a leak that starts on the other side of the ceiling tiles or drywall and which is now completely absorbed into the materials and beginning to seep through to the other side. Never wait to have this work done because the ceiling tiles or drywall will simply become soft and crumble and then you will probably need to have your ceiling repaired in addition to your roof.
2. Discoloration on the roof
If you stand on the street or sidewalk and look at your roof and notice discolored spots, this is typically a sign of water damage under and around the tiles. Your roof should never have these spots. Call a roofer to have them inspected. As with discoloration on your ceiling, ignoring this problem will only lead to more repair work that needs to be done down the road.
3. A mouldy or musty smell coming from your ceiling
When you smell mould or have a musty smell in your house and if it seems to be coming from the ceiling, this can be a sign of a roof leak. When water seeps through the roof, it will usually collect on drywall or attic insulation and, in turn, mould can begin to grow. This, too, is not a problem to ignore because allowing mould to grow in your house can actually be damaging to your health. Have a roofer inspect the area of the smell and see if there are leaks in the roof in that area.
4. A sudden spike in your utility bills
Your roof acts as an insulator for your home and if it has leaks, your air conditioning and heating will simply escape through these. If you notice a sudden spike in your utility bills and this cannot be explained by a rate hike or any other reason, have your roof inspected and see if it may need repair.
